The Harvesting Time (August 22 – September 21)

Harvesting Time signifies a time to enjoy the benefits from Earth’s bounty.  However, based on the Native American Medicine Wheel it is much more than the harvesting of food, it is a time to harvest the potential that lies within us.  This is also a time when we can discover our unique talents and bring them to their full potential.

During this time summers power has now passed and is moving into another transition (seasonal cycle.)  As the days shorten we focus on gathering in our harvests and remember what our responsibilities are, so as not to neglect in times to come.  It is also a time to remember that “you get from life, what you put into life.”

This cycle also implies keeping the unity that is in the harmony of the whole and trust.  People born during this cycle have a close affinity with Nature and enjoy tending to the Earth and all growing things.

The essence of this cycle can be best described as a time where you may experience being:  industrious, practical, fastidious, considerate, and have warm feelings

Medicine totems: Brown Bear, Violets, Topaz (animal, plant, minerals associated with this earth cycle)

Affinity Colors: Brown and violet.

I Ching: Desire for liberation.

Best Day of the week: Wednesday.

Harvesting Time: A time to discover what true value is, what is superficial and what can be eliminated.  Realize that wisdom is not learned through struggle and conquest, but rather through the passage of time and our experiences.  Be accepting of what cannot be changed and apply energy only on those things that can.  Wisdom will come through knowing the difference.

Traveling the Medicine Wheel Web reveals hidden secrets of your own mirror – your true self.  Realize the qualities that you brought with you into this life, your inherent knowledge and the experiences you intended to learn during your Earth Walk.  The quest to discover your life’s purpose.

I hope you have enjoyed this post.  I also hope to hear from all of you who read this post and let me know how your journey is going.

Keeping pet chickens and putting organic eggs on the table!

In my pursuit of learning how to grow organic foods I found a really down-to-earth and a real back to basics website about “Keeping Pet Chickens”.    I had not given it much thought because I am an urban city dweller living a back to basics lifestyle.  I have been growing hydroponic veggies and learning how to eat better organic foods, but this is a story for another time.

What I learned is that it is possible to produce my own organic eggs right in my own back yard!  And I can care for and keep my chickens as pets.  Since I am not a full time vegetarian it has been a real challenge to find natural and organic foods.  (If you have ever seen a poultry farm you will never want to eat those type of eggs again.  Trust me.)

Pet chickens on top of coop

I hope you will visit keepingpetchickens.com and find out how easy it really is to start raising your own pet chickens, even if you live as a city and urban dweller.  I have just started building a small hen house in my back yard and will keep you posted on my progress.

I want to end this post with what I am learning about natural and organic farming.  It  is sustainability.  It’s about maintaining natural ecological balances. Of course it is chemical free, no fertilizers or pesticides.  It is good for the environment.  It helps to maintain our open spaces.  It’s good for wildlife.  This beautiful balance gives us much more than just healthy fruits, vegetables and now organic eggs, it puts us back to basics, the way it should be.

I hope you enjoyed the post and I’d love to hear about your experiences and journeys.

The Ripening Time (July 22 – August 21)

Nature appears to be reaching up to the Sun and brings forth its fruit in abundance. This is a time to pause from our busy lives and refresh ourselves before the work of the harvesting season arrives. It is a time for reflection and remembering of what we are now and what we hope to become.

During this time the influence of the solar energy gives us a sense of being creative and outgoing and a general temperament of being “sunny”. This is also a time that will encourage the qualities of openness and warmth and will be mostly present in people born during this earth cycle time.

The essence of this cycle can be best described as a time where you may experience being:  proud, energetic, confident, generous, passionate and intense.

Medicine totems: Salmon, Raspberry, Carnelian (animal, plant, minerals associated with this earth cycle)

Affinity Color: Red

I Ching: Desire for consistency.

Best Day of the week: Sunday

Ripening Time: A time to discover purposefulness and to put trust and usefulness in place of pride and vanity.  Direct energy towards gaining wisdom on an emotional level and letting go of fear and failure.

The Native American Medicine Wheel reveals hidden secrets of how we can fully understand our relationship with mother Earth and how the yearly cycles play a key role in our daily lives.  Our planet provides us with everything we need to live healthy and find our true destiny.  I hope you have enjoyed reading and  I look forward to your comments.
